Christopher Nolan’s next film will be smaller in size and have a long theatrical window

Christophe Nolanthe next film project would follow J. Robert Oppenheimer and his involvement in the invention of the atomic bomb, and the director had terms for any studios that were trying to woo him for the chance to help him distribute this film.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Nolan’s requests included a $ 100 million budget, full creative control, 20% gross of the first dollar, and a six-week blackout surrounding his project’s theatrical release date, at during which the studio would not release any other cinema. This helps reduce competition and generate a bigger box office profit for Nolan personally, as well as Universal.

At one point, several movie studios were trying to recruit Nolan, including Apple, Sony, and Paramount. But in the end, it looks like Universal won its hand. It comes after a bitter breakup from Warner Bros. last year over the studio’s decision to adapt to the times and release multiple feature films simultaneously in theaters and on their streaming service HBO Max, a topic Nolan has publicly expressed his own dissatisfaction with. According to THR’s report, Nolan’s terms for his new project also involved what sources say was a cinema window of around 100 days before the film made its way to streaming services – presumably, in this case, Peacock, which is owned by NBCUniversal.

Nolan’s departure from Warner Bros. is one of the many signs that Hollywood is about to face a crossroads where movie studios must adapt or die, financially speaking. It’s been a long time coming, but also dramatically accelerated over the past two years due to COVID and the theater closings that followed. According to THR’s report, many details of Nolan’s deal with Universal have yet to be worked out, so the possibility of a six-week outage might not even come true – especially as the theatrical landscape could. be very different in early 2023 or late 2024, when Nolan’s film is currently set to be released.

Details on the film’s production are still pending, so stay tuned to Collider for more reports on this upcoming project.
