Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer plays Cillian Murphy in the title role

Universal Studios and Syncopy announced that, as before, Christopher Nolanthe next film will be Oppenheimer, In regards to J. Robert Oppenheimerparticipated in the development of the atomic bomb during World War II. In addition to confirming that this will be Nolan’s next project, Cillian Murphy was announced to play the title role.

The film is described as “an epic thriller shot in IMAX that immerses audiences in the thrilling paradox of the enigmatic man who must risk destroying the world in order to save it”. Oppenheimer will also be written by Nolan, produced by Emma Thomas, and is based on the Pulitzer Prize winning book American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer, written by Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin.

Oppenheimer will begin production in early 2022 and will be shot on IMAX 65mm and 65mm wide format film. Nolan will also find several other previous collaborators on this project, including the producer Charles Roven, that of Nolan Principle, Dunkirk, and Interstellar photographer director Hoyte Through Hoytema, Principle editor Jennifer Lame, and Principle composer Louis Göransson.

While Murphy has starred in several Nolan films, including all three The black Knight movie theater, Creation, and Dunkirk, the actor has never starred in any of Nolan’s films. It will also be Nolan’s return to WWII after Dunkirk, which earned the director his first and only Academy Award nomination for Best Director.

The announcement also states that Universal will distribute Oppenheimer theatrical around the world. After Nolan’s disapproval of Warner Bros. ‘ distribution methods during the pandemic, Nolan moved to Universal for the latter project. “The films of Christopher Nolan and Emma Thomas have broken the boundaries of what cinematic storytelling can achieve,” said the president of Universal Filmed Entertainment Group, Donna Langley. “We are delighted to be working alongside them on this exceptional and extraordinary project and are grateful for their shared passion and commitment to the theatrical experience.”

Oppenheimer hits theaters on July 21, 2023.
