Chrome 76 blocks prevents detection of Incognito mode

[ad_1]

Google Chrome 76, the next stable version of Google's web browser, will prevent sites from detecting if Incognito mode is enabled in the browser.

Until now, all the Web sites needed was to use a bit of code, like this one, to determine if the Incognito mode was enabled in Google Chrome. The same detection worked in several other browsers, including Opera and Safari.

Sites use the information to prevent users from accessing the content. When you open an article page on the Boston Globe website, you are greeted by the message "You are using a browser configured privately or incognito." To continue reading articles in this mode, sign in to your Globe account ".

In other words: the site has prevented Incognito users from reading articles unless they have an account and do not connect to it.

Incognito mode or private browsing mode is a popular option for reading articles on newspaper websites, especially those with free reading limits. Data such as cookies are not stored locally in the mode so that sites can not use cookies to keep track of articles read.

There are other ways to get around paywalls, for example by pretending to be Google Bot, modifying the referrer, or using browser extensions (which come and go quickly in general).

From Chrome 76, sites may not be able to detect when the browser is in normal mode or in incognito mode. Although this does not guarantee that the sites will not create other obstacles for the users who visit them by using the Incognito mode, this concerns at least the easy detection of the private browsing mode.

Sites can always ask users to log in regardless of the mode they are in, but they can not isolate users who use the incognito mode.

Chrome 76 Stable is expected by July 30, 2019. The new browser will introduce other changes, including a modification making the use of Flash even more annoying in the browser.

Now, it's your turn: What is your opinion of change?
