Chrome 88 introduces tabbed search and improved password protections

Google on Tuesday announced big updates coming to Chrome 88, including tabbed search and improved password protections.

Perhaps the biggest part of Chrome 88 is the new password protections. One of the new features will make it easy for users to fix weak passwords. The update will identify when a password is weak and then give Chrome users the ability to create and store something much stronger.

Speaking of changing weak passwords, Google said Chrome 88 will also make it easier to update multiple usernames and passwords in one convenient place. In Chrome settings on desktop and iOS, users will be able to manage all of their saved passwords. The same functionality will soon be available on Android, according to Google.

The improved password features come amid a host of other bug fixes and improvements, including better support for dark themes on Windows 10, less intrusive permission requests, and a new Chrome flag for the tab search, already available on Chromebooks. Chrome will no longer support FTP URLs.

Google is also introducing a number of changes under the hood in Chrome 88, which the search giant detailed on its development site. One of these changes concerns the API of digital products. Now, web apps published to the Google Play Store can use Play Store billing, just like native apps.

These new updates come on the heels of changes introduced late last year designed to make extensions more private and secure. The search giant has said that starting in 2021, it will change the way extensions access data and how permissions work when an extension is installed. It would also give users more transparency about how an extension’s data is used.

Google has taken a stricter approach to privacy in Chrome. Last year, the company introduced a Chrome Safety Check feature, biometric authentication for password filling on iOS, and a touch input feature on Android.

Google has said that new Chrome 88 features will be available in the coming weeks, so check for an update for your browser.
