Google is working to make private web browsing on Chrome for iOS a bit more secure by letting you lock private browsing tabs with Face or Touch ID. The update, detailed in the beta of the app for iPhone and iPad, essentially scrambles the incognito tabs in the tab picker so that they remain hidden until you authenticate with a fingerprint. or a face unlock.
It’s a useful little update, especially if like me, you have dozens of tabs open at all times. Enabling the feature can also give you some peace of mind the next time someone asks you to borrow your phone to use Chrome.
As 9to5Google Notes, the feature may not yet be available to all beta users. Google has withheld new versions of many of its iOS apps following the push for Apple’s privacy labels. Therefore, it is not known when the update will arrive, but Chrome 89 is expected to release next month.
Once live, you can enable it through Settings, Privacy, and then selecting “Lock private browsing tabs when you close Chrome”.
