Previously, we had indicated that Chromebooks could have up to four virtual workspaces or desktops and we now know when this feature will arrive. During the Google I / O session this week when creating Android apps on Chrome OS, it was announced that developers would benefit from this feature in Chrome OS 76.
Indeed, the Chromium team is actively working on this feature with code updates every few days for several weeks. Here is the last look, although the final implementation may be slightly different.
This new video, released on Thursday, illustrates recent improvements, as the virtual desktop mini-views now show thumbnails of applications running on each virtual desktop. And so far, the overall performance of animations and transitions seem to work well, although I do not know the hardware configuration of Chrome OS devices on which it runs.
I like the fact that closing a virtual workspace automatically moves open applications from this space to the main space. It's a quick way to consolidate your applications if you want them all in one place for quick access. Again, this is a demonstration of the feature still in progress, which could be different.
Do not forget that for the moment, Chrome OS 76 should arrive on the Stable Channel this summer; August 6 to be exact. However, with the new features advancing in the Canary, Dev, and Beta channels well before that for testing, I will have a practical insight as soon as the virtual workspaces arrive in one of these software versions.
