Chrome OS will soon be testing a frequently requested feature, the ability to display the current date and notification icons in the corner of the shelf.
For years, Chromebook owners have been asking for the ability to display the date in the corner of the shelf, next to the current time. On the Chromebook Help Community, a post asking to add the date to the shelf received almost 500 upvotes.
It looks like Google is finally listening to comments, as a soon to be released flag on chrome: // flags indicates that Chrome OS is getting the date on the shelf. In addition to the date, the shelf will also be able to display “important” notifications.

We were able to enable this updated shelf in Chrome OS Canary, offering a preview of how the date will appear in the corner. Next to the number of notifications, the WiFi strength indicator and the battery indicator, you will see the current date and time printed in an abbreviated form, for example “February 15, 1:10”.
Notably, the date can only appear if the Chrome OS shelf is pinned to the bottom of the screen, not to the left or right. It is not certain at this time if this is a permanent limitation or if it will be improved before the feature leaves its testing phase.
When it comes to “important notification icons,” Chrome OS considers any “critical” notification to be important, such as a low battery warning. Likewise, any “pinned” notification, which means it cannot be dismissed, is considered important. The best example of a pinned notification is Chrome OS’s caps lock indicator.

If your Chrome OS device has a screen that is between 800 and 1280 pixels wide, you will only gain the important notification icons. Anything over 1280 pixels wide and your Chrome OS shelf will also earn the date.
Google has been working on this “scalable status area” which has been adding the date to the Chrome OS shelf since January. With that in mind, the first time this shelf improvement could get to try through the above indicator would be Chrome OS 90, which is expected to arrive in April.
