COVID-19 has had many negative effects in the market, but it has been tremendous for the PC market as millions of people have moved on to work and learn from home. As a direct result of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Chromebook market in particular has exploded with over 4x growth.
As reported by Canalys This week, the fourth quarter of 2020 saw the Chromebook market at an all time high. During 2020 and the COVID-19 pandemic, the Chromebook market as a whole has seen over 30 million units shipped.
When breaking down that number, Lenovo was the biggest winner. The company was still below the 3.5 million units delivered by HP, but the 2.8 million Lenovo Chromebooks shipped in Q4 2020 represented a massive growth of 1,766%. Samsung, Asus, Acer and Dell all saw steady triple-digit growth during the pandemic, but failed to gain traction over their competition. Rushabh Doshi, Research Director of Canalys, said:

This has been accompanied by the growth of tablets, taking this market to its highest peak since 2015 with just under 53 million tablets shipped in the fourth quarter of 2020 alone. Apple of course led this market with its excellent iPad lineup, but Samsung was in a solid second place with almost the same 40% year-over-year growth. The overall PC market has also seen a 35% year-over-year jump due to the pandemic, but it’s clear that much of that focus has been on Chromebooks, likely due to affordable prices.
