According to a recent report by Canalys, Chromebooks were the top performing client PC product in the third quarter of 2020, growing 122% year-on-year in shipments. Chrome OS devices led the PC category (in terms of growth) with a total of 9.4 million shipments in the last quarter alone. The report found that HP led the Chromebook market with 3.2 million units sold during the period, with annual growth of 116.9% and market share of 34.1%. Speaking of the sudden surge in popularity of Chromebooks during the quarter, Canalys analyst Ishan Dutt noted:

Uncertainty over the course of school terms remains at the forefront of educators’ concerns in the face of secondary lockdowns and protocols related to the management of infections within a school population. Besides Chromebooks, the tablet market also saw impressive growth in the quarter for similar reasons. The global tablet market grew 43% year-on-year, with 44.3 million units shipped in the third quarter of 2020. As expected, Apple led the tablet market with over 15.2 million units. sold, an increase of 47% compared to last year.

Samsung took second place with an impressive growth of 79.8% and more than 9 million units shipped in the quarter. Huawei, Amazon and Lenovo took the remaining spots in the top five list.
