A few months ago, I created a mockup showing what a dedicated Calendar widget would look like right on the Chromebook shelf. This would allow users to have quick access to see which date falls on which day of the week, and even potentially see all upcoming events on their calendar. I also hinted that said widget would be better integrated with Google Calendar. If you are interested, you can see it in the video and image below. While I would have liked to do some things differently with the design, I remained optimistic that Google would end up adopting the same logic as I did – this is an essential tool that Chrome OS lacks for productivity.
Well guess what? They did it ! A new Chrome developer flag originally discovered by Chrome Story shows that Google intends to embed a “Calendar view” in the device’s “UnifiedSystemTray” and even links directly to Google Calendar! In fact, this is another “productivity experience” – yes, just like the new and upcoming “productivity launcher” that I also featured in my mockup. It seems that my vision for the future of Chrome OS is slowly coming to fruition!

Originally, I thought that after seeing the ‘Show date in bin’ feature added to the shelf via another flag, our expectation of receiving a real calendar have been torn to pieces, but it proves otherwise. The repository for this change actually shows that the same developer who helps bring this functionality to Chromebooks is working on this calendar integration, so it seems like a continuation of that experience to increase productivity by bringing these tools to the fore. After activating the date indicator in the bin, I can’t live without it – it’s actually very strange to see the bottom right of my Chromebook without it!
According to Chrome Story, you’ll also be able to quickly toggle Calendar view on your shelf via a keyboard shortcut, which is great. By pressing Alt + Shift + C (for Calendar, of course), the new “view” – however it looks – will appear on the screen. I’m guessing you can turn it off again with the same hotkey, but I’m also guessing you can just click on it to make it go away. Well what do you think of all of this?
