Chrome’s Dino Run game wins Tokyo Olympics Easter egg

With the 2020 Summer Olympics set to begin in Tokyo this Friday, Google is bringing some of the best games to your home by adding new modes to Chrome’s classic Dino Run game.

If you ever find yourself without the internet and try to visit a website in Chrome, you will see a T-rex on the page telling you that you are offline. By pressing the space bar, he will jump, activating the Dino Run mini-game. Normally this game acts as a way to kill time until your internet is working again, but you can also play it anytime by entering chrome: // dino in your address bar.

However, as Mr_Kris_ spotted this week on Reddit, the Chrome Dino game has received a major tweak. The generally monochrome game now features full color Olympic torches among the usual cactus obstacles. If you collect one of these torches instead of jumping over it, your Dino Run game will leave the desert and cacti behind and turn into something that looks like one of the Summer Olympics.

For example, a reskin sees your T-rex riding a surfboard along the coast, jumping over dangerous waves. In a gymnastics-themed variation, your T-rex dons a leotard and has to gracefully jump over the pommel horses. Obviously, the more humorous new take on Chrome’s Dino Run is based on the equestrian events of the Summer Olympics, training the T-rex to ride horses, jumping over fences. To play a different variant, you will need to refresh the page and collect the torch again.

Once you hit an obstacle and failed (which earned you a gold medal), the usual “Game Over” screen will periodically display a different message, “”, which roughly translates to “Replay “. The use of Japanese is clearly a tribute to this year’s Olympics in Tokyo.

As a fun note for those who care about high scores, each of Chrome’s Olympic-themed twists and turns in Dino Run only has some hurdles you need to jump through. There aren’t any of the usual challenges that you have to dodge or carefully time two jumps in a row. While certainly less interesting than the main game Dino Run, these versions make it easy to rack up a high score to “wow” your friends.
