CBS gave a serial order to United States of Al, his multi-camera comedy pilot by Chuck Lorre, David Goetsch and Maria Ferrari. The intention is for the newly revived series, starring Adhir Kalyan and Parker Young, to air during the 2020-2021 broadcast season, which is disrupted by the coronavirus pandemic.
The series’ collection announcement comes on Veterans Day, which is suitable for a show that has the title character of a veteran. The order also brings Lorre’s comedy series currently on CBS to five, with United States of Al join the most watched comedy series on air, Young Sheldon; Comedy # 2 Mum; the most watched new comedy series from last season Bob ♥ Abishola; and the newcomer of this season B Positive. This is a new record for Lorre, whose previous record was four series on the network. Lorre also has the Golden Globe-winning Netflix comedy series. This is equivalent to the record held by television icon Norman Lear who had six prime-time comedies during the 1975-1976 season.
This is the first time in a long time that Lorre has done two pilots in the same cycle with B positive and United States of Al, both went to the series. B positive was the only 2020 broadcast pilot to be completed during the regular pilot season, interrupted by the pandemic. Among the remaining CBS pilots, comedies United States of Al and Wilde things (fka Big bad wolves) were recently shot. There’s no decision yet on the latter, which stars Julie Bowen.
Created and written by Goetsch and Ferrari, The United States of Al talks about the friendship between Riley (Young), a Marine combat veteran struggling to readjust to civilian life in Ohio, and Awalmir (Al) (Kalyan), the performer who served with his unit in Afghanistan and just arrived to start a new life in America. Kelli Goss, Dean Norris and Elizabeth Alderfer are also on the bill. Goetsch & Ferrari, Lorre, Reza Aslan, Mahyad Tousi and director Mark Cendrowski (driver only) are executive producers of Warner Bros. Television and Chuck Lorre Productions.
