Hip-hop and R&B producer Chucky Thompson has passed away. Young Guru announced the news on Monday, August 9, paying tribute to the beatmaker, who paved the way for his career.
“There is nothing I can write that will take away this pain,” Guru wrote alongside a photo of him and Thompson. “I have to say RIP to my mentor, my big brother, the man who changed my life forever. You were the nicest person the world has ever seen. You were the most gifted musician I have ever known.
“You treated my family like family from day one,” he continued.
“You pointed out to labels that I had to fly to New York with you every session. You put me in rooms with Biggie. I’ll be forever indebted to you, and I’ll be your little brother forever. This one hurts so bad that I can even explain it. RIP @ chucklife365 there will never be another you !!!! ”
Thompson – originally from Washington DC – made his debut playing for legendary Chuck Brown go-go group The Soul Searchers before landing a role as a member of the “Hitmen” – an in-house producer group at Bad Boy Entertainment. There he worked alongside Mary J. Blige, Usher and TLC and more, and produced hits such as “Big Poppa” by The Notorious BIG, “Flava in Ya Ear” by Craig Mack, “Can ‘t You See’ by Craig Mack. “As soon as I get home” by Total and Faith Evans.
Although he is praised for creating many of the beats that shaped the sound of 90s hip hop and R&B, his production discography spans from that time to the present day. Before his death, he worked alongside Shania Twain on Love Records and was filming a documentary about his life.
“We are working on my documentary, Chucky Thompson presents DC Go-Go. This is not the story of go-go music; it’s my story with go-go music, ”he told Grammy.com last month. “A lot of people don’t understand music. They don’t even know what it takes to make a galore record. I had a segment based on the music: another based on the movement where it was considered the official music of the city, this process and how it got there. It is very important for our city. The last part is the pillar: what’s going on in the city versus the general public … I just want to drop the flag for my city and let them know that we are about to exhibit some things . By September 2022, I should be done.
