Next month, Chvrches will follow their 2018 album Love is Dead with a new LP called Screen violence. The Scottish trio recorded the new album remotely during the pandemic, with different members of the group working from different sides of the world – Lauren Mayberry and Martin Doherty in Los Angeles, Iain Cook in Glasgow. We have already released the first singles “He Said She Said” and “How Not To Drown”, the latter being the group’s collaboration with Robert Smith of The Cure. Today Chvrches shared another new single.
“Good Girls” works as a kind of statement of intent. Mayberry starts the song off like this: “Killing your idols is a chore / And it’s fucking boring / Because I don’t need it anymore.” It’s a song about the frustration of waiting a long time for the rest of the world to catch up with you and the exhaustion of having to explain yourself over and over again.
Musically, “Good Girls” is the kind of bright big-hall dance-pop that Chvrches has been doing for some time now. Message or no message, this is the kind of song that seems likely to appear in an advertisement for an Internet service provider. You can hear it below.
Speaking of the new song, Mayberry says:
The opening line (killing your idols is a chore) was something I wrote after listening to friends arguing over the current implications of liking some problematic male artists – I was struck by the efforts the people would do to excuse their heroes and how that was so juxtaposed to my own experiences in the world. Women must constantly justify their right to exist and negotiate for their own space. We are told that bad things don’t happen to good girls. That if you organize yourself to match the ideal – keep it small, safe, and acceptable – you’ll be fine, and that’s just not true.
