Cicely Tyson’s new memoir sold out on Amazon, a day after the Oscar-winning actress passed away.
Tyson’s memory, Just as i am, was released last Tuesday and was quickly placed at the top of Amazon’s bestseller list after her manager confirmed the actress’ death on Thursday afternoon. As of Friday, physical copies of the book were sold out on Amazon, although they are still available from Barnes & Noble as of this writing.
Tyson’s memoir is still available for online reading through Amazon Kindle, or as an audiobook through Audible. The audiobook is narrated by Tyson and Robin Miles, with Tyson’s close friend and How to escape murder co-star Viola Davis recounting the foreword.

Just as i am was Tyson’s literary debut. The actress and activist co-wrote the book with Michelle Burford, founding editor of O, Oprah magazine, and the 432 page hardcover was published by HarperCollins. The publisher posted a statement on Twitter, calling Tyson a “Icon” and “legend”.
Tyson had just appeared on CBS this morning Tuesday to discuss her memories with host Gayle King, telling King she waited years to write her story because she felt she had even more to give. “That’s why I’m still here,” she said.
The memoir traces Tyson’s roots from her childhood in Harlem and her childhood in the church, to becoming a successful model and actress. While she would go on to garner incredible acclaim in Hollywood – winning Tonys, Emmys and an honorary Oscar – Tyson also experienced incredible racial and personal trauma during her years in the limelight. As one of the most prolific black actresses in the business, Tyson decided early on that she would take over from black storytelling and pledged to use her voice for change. She decided, she told King, that “I would use my career as a platform.”
In the book’s notes, Tyson writes, “I am a daughter and a mother, a sister and a friend. I am an observer of human nature and the dreamer of bold dreams. I am a woman who has done such immeasurable harm as I have loved, a child of God divinely guided by his hand. And here, in my ninth decade, I’m a woman who, finally, has something meaningful to say.
Asked by King how she would like to be remembered, Tyson was contemplative. “I did my best,” she says. “That’s all.”
As well as being a famous actress, Tyson was also a renowned producer, writer, and civil rights activist. Cicely Tyson was 96 years old.
