A few weeks before her death at 96, Cicely Tyson spoke to InStyle for the magazine’s next March issue. But the magazine published the article early online after Tyson passed away on Thursday.
She reminded the publication that in the mid-1950s, when she first wanted to become an actress, “my mom didn’t like the idea. She told me that if I was going to do this, I had to leave her house. And that’s what I did.
Tyson moved in with a friend who had a job and borrowed the boyfriend’s clothes to audition.
“After I moved, my mother didn’t speak to me for years. She was worried that I was going to live a life of sin – that’s what she thought show business was all about, ”Tyson said. “But I was still determined to prove him wrong. And so my mom became my biggest motivator in life. I thought, ‘I’ll show him!’ ”
Tyson has won two Emmys, a Tony and an Honorary Oscar for his iconic career.
She told InStyle: “In many ways, I’m only now starting to explore my own identity. I have a performing arts school in East Orange, NJ, and not too long ago I was talking to a group of kids there. A young girl of about 13 said to me: “Mrs. Tyson, now that you’ve done it, what are you going to do next? ”
Laughing as he recalled the magazine’s anecdote, Tyson added, “I said, ‘Honey, let me tell you something. The day I feel like I’ve done it, I’m done. I hope I never, ever felt this way.
