The Bengals today named Marion Hobby as the team’s defensive line coach. Hobby, 54, brings with him 26 years of coaching experience, including six years in the NFL.

Hobby has spent the last two seasons (2019-20) as a defensive line coach for the Miami Dolphins. In 2020, Hobby’s defensive line helped the Miami defense to place sixth in the NFL in points allowed (21.1 points per game), tied for 10th in sacks (41) and first the third efficiency (31.2%; 58 conversions out of 186 attempts). Prior to his stint in Miami, Hobby spent two seasons (2017-18) as a defensive line coach for the Jacksonville Jaguars. The 2017 Jaguars totaled 55 sacks, the third-most in the NFL in the past seven seasons, and helped propel the team to a berth in the AFC Championship game.

“We are delighted that Marion is joining the Bengals,” said head coach Zac Taylor. “He brings a wealth of experience and fits in perfectly with our staff and our defensive line room. We look forward to welcoming him and his family to Cincinnati.”

Hobby’s previous experience in the NFL came as the defensive ends coach of the New Orleans Saints from 2006-07. His 20 seasons as a college coach include time with Clemson (2005, ’11 -16), Duke (’08 -10), Mississippi (1999-2004), Tennessee (’98), Louisiana-Lafayette (’96 -97 ) and Tennessee-Martin (’95). As a player, Hobby was an All-SEC defensive end in Tennessee before being selected by the Minnesota Vikings in the third round of the 1990 draft. He played three seasons in the NFL with the Vikings and Patriots.

Hobby is replacing Nick Eason, who was the 2019-20 Bengals defensive line coach.
