“They would sit and joke. It was like a comedy sometimes to watch them both, ”Cindy McCain said of the couple’s friendship.
As the video explained how Biden and McCain were prepared to cross the aisle to legislate, the late senator’s wife lamented that such an approach “was a style of legislation and leadership that you just can’t find much more.
McCain, who as the 2008 GOP presidential candidate directly confronted Biden while he was Barack Obama’s vice president, died in 2018 after a battle with the same aggressive form of brain cancer that has killed Biden’s eldest son three years earlier.
The late Arizona Senator had openly argued with President Donald Trump, who mocked McCain’s status as a war hero and continues to this day to ridicule McCain’s role in Republicans’ efforts to repeal the affordable care law. This vote was highlighted in the video released on Tuesday.
“When millions of Americans were confronted with the loss of their health insurance, it was Joe’s friend who saved Obamacare by crossing the aisle,” says the narrator of the video.
Trump was not invited to McCain’s funeral and later complained that the McCain family were not grateful enough to him for some aspects of his memorial services.
McCain was far from the only big Republican name to lend his voice to Biden’s campaign at this week’s convention. On Tuesday, she was joined by Colin Powell, former Secretary of State to George W. Bush, who delivered a speech.
The rally’s opening night on Monday featured remarks from former Ohio Governor and 2016 GOP presidential candidate John Kasich, as well as other Republican politicians who back Biden over Trump.
But it’s unclear whether McCain’s appearance on Tuesday amounts to formal endorsement from the former vice president.
McCain teased the video on Tuesday, posting the link to a short clip on Twitter and writing, “I was honored to accept the Biden campaign’s invitation to participate in a video celebrating their relationship.”
But as McCain’s daughter Meghan announced this spring that she would vote for Biden, Cindy McCain crushed a report last April that her family could lend support to Biden.
Biden, she said at the time, is “a wonderful man and dear friend of the McCain family.” However, I do not intend to get involved in presidential politics.
