At just 10 fights in her professional career, Ciryl Gane is a UFC champion.
The French heavyweight was perfect from start to finish as he simply overwhelmed Derrick Lewis with speed and power before finally unleashing a vicious third-round shooting combination that helped him secure a third-round TKO stoppage. in the main event of UFC 265.
The end came at 4:11 in the third round as Gane won the interim heavyweight title, setting up an inevitable showdown with his former training partner Francis Ngannou.
“I’m happy but I feel a little bad for my man in front of his fans,” Gane said, speaking to Lewis in his hometown of Houston. “I am happy, I am proud. Everyone knows what my game plan is. I like to move. No secret, that was the game plan, of course.
“It’s for [Fernand Lopez]. It’s for the whole team. It’s not just for me. It’s for my trainer. It’s for the fans, for the country.
It was a smart strategy all night long for Gane as he stayed on the outside, pushing Lewis with kicks in the legs and staying clear of the immense power returning from “The Black Beast”. Lewis stayed by the cage in an attempt to entice Gane into a trade, but the Frenchman was doing his job of not biting the hook.
Late in the first round, Gane unleashed a heavy kick followed by a punch that caught Lewis directly in the eye which made him wince as he looked to reset himself and avoid further damage.
While Gane controlled the pace, his output wasn’t so much that Lewis was forced to constantly defend combinations, but his own offense was also almost nonexistent. In the clinch, Gane was able to muscle Lewis around the cage and he even managed to land a powerful elbow over it as he fled to get back to the center of the cage.
At the start of the third round, Gane attacked the leg with more frequency as he began to really dig Lewis’ thigh to start taking down the Houston native.
With less than two minutes remaining in the frame, Gane unleashed another kick that buckled Lewis to the knees and that was exactly what the 31-year-old heavyweight needed to start unloading his bigger punches in order to get the finish.
Gane threw a huge uppercut that cut Lewis off and he continued to explode while being wary of not engaging too much and maybe catching a hay in return. Finally, after hammering Lewis with another shot that ultimately dropped him to the canvas, Gane was shooting with punches from the top and referee Dan Miragliotta had no choice but to stop the fight.
It was an ultra-impressive performance from Gane, who remains undefeated and now holds a portion of the heavyweight title as he awaits a possible unification fight with Ngannou.
When asked about his anticipated clash with “The Predator,” Gane had just a few words for arguably one of the most terrifying knockout artists to ever compete in the UFC and a fighter he had previously called teammate.
“Let’s go,” Gane said. “Let’s go.”
