Citing arbitration clauses, Riot Games decides to block employee lawsuits

Riot Games has filed motions to force two employees involved in an ongoing lawsuit against the company to a private arbitration, a move that the company's attorney said in Kotaku is consistent with the terms of the employees' employment contracts .

The motions spotted by Kotaku are the latest development of a duo of lawsuits filed against Riot Games over the last six months by past and current employees who accused the company of promoting gender-based discrimination.

The lawsuits themselves followed a story from Kotaku last year about what many of the studio's developers described as a "toxic workplace," which resulted in female employees being discriminated against and harassed.

The lawyer representing Riot Games stated that the two employees involved in the private arbitration motions had both accepted the inclusion of arbitration clauses in their employment contracts. According to the lawyer, these clauses require employees to bring complaints such as those raised in existing lawsuits in private arbitration rather than in a lawsuit.

In a press release, the lawyer representing the employees stated that these motions "serve only to silence the voices of those who denounce such misconduct".
