‘Claire’, the Scottish Greyhound, was crowned Best in Show at the 2020 National Dog Show, beating hundreds of other dogs for the prestigious title. The competition, which aired on Thanksgiving Day but took place earlier this month, went without spectators due to the coronavirus pandemic, according to a press release from the show.
Earlier in the competition, the Scottish Deer won the Hound Group, which consisted of 28 breeds, NBC Sports reports, including the Afghan Hound and Dachshund.
After beating her group, “Claire” fought against the other six group winners to win the biggest prize of the day. She defeated the Standard Poodle of the Non-Sporting Group, the Portuguese Water Dog of the Task Force, the Miniature American Shepherd of the Herding Group, the Wire Fox Terrier of the Terrier Group, the English Springer Spaniel of the Sporting Group and the Affenpinscher of the Toy Group, reports NBC Sports.
The English Springer Spaniel won the Best in Show reserve award.
Following the victory, her handler Angie Lloyd spoke of the “wonderful” pup. “Claire’s day is everyday, to be completely honest,” Lloyd told NBC. “She’s as wonderful on the inside as she is on the outside.”
This year’s champion is a very different dog than the one last year’s winner – “Thor” the bulldog.
Three new breeds were eligible to compete in the National Dog Show in 2020: the barbet from the Sporting Group, the Belgian Laekenois from the Herding Group and the Dogo Argentino from the Working Group, according to the event schedule. The Belgian Laekenois was not represented in the competition, NBC Sports said.
The beloved dog show was once again hosted by former “Seinfeld” student John O’Hurley, along with AKC licensed breeder and judge David Frei and NBC Sports analyst Mary Carillo, according to the program of the event.
