Classic hangouts will hang a little longer – TechCrunch

Earlier this year, Google announced the transition of all G Suite Hangouts users to Hangouts Chat and Meet by October 2019, and then discontinued the classic Hangouts. But many G Suite users enjoy their classic Hangouts. That's why Google has now changed the Hangouts retirement date, which is "not until June 2020". This also leaves the door open for a later date. "More definitive date" at some point in the future.

It should be noted that this new timeline is for G Suite Hangouts for paid users, but it will also influence the consumer timeline. Exactly what's happening in Hangouts for consumers, however, remains a little obscure, as Google's consumer messaging strategy failed after the disappointment caused by Allo.

But here's what we know: Earlier this year, Google said it wanted to get consumers to a free version of Hangouts Chat and Meet after the transition from G Suite. A spokesman for Google said that this plan was still in place and that it would begin after the transition of G Suite.

For G Suite users, Google plans to ease the transition for G Suite users by seeking to transfer them to the new platform. Administrators can already access an accelerated calendar and turn off classic Hangouts now (but they still need an invitation from Google to do so).
