– A freezer containing the Moderna coronavirus vaccine was in a secure location at a VA pharmacy in Boston, with an alarm system activated. On Tuesday, ABC reports, employees realized the freezer was not working. “The plug was found loose after a contractor accidentally removed it during cleanup,” said a spokesperson for VA Boston Healthcare System. “As a result, 1,900 doses of the Moderna Covid-19 vaccine stored in the freezer were compromised.”

Officials said they did not expect the disaster to affect immunization schedules. “The reconstitution doses are underway,” the spokesperson said. An investigation has started, according to NBC, into why the freezer alarm and monitoring system failed to alert anyone. The Moderna vaccine must be kept cold, but temperatures too low destroyed a shipment of nearly 12,000 doses en route to Michigan this month, according to NBC. (A freezer breakdown in California left a hospital two hours to administer its vaccine.)
