Kevin Smith has talked about doing Clerk III for a very long time now, to the point that we had lost hope that it would ever be realized. The filmmaker went through various iterations of the script, eventually landing on a draft he previewed in January that shows the film starts with “Welcome To The Black Parade” by My Chemical Romance (Smith and his daughter Harley Quinn are big fans). Clerk III is starting to feel more real now, as Deadline announced that Lionsgate has acquired the worldwide rights to the film and that production will begin next month.

In a statement given to Deadline, Smith says:

“There is a Tao saying that goes something like, ‘To be great is to keep going. To continue is to go far. To go far is to come back. Thanks to Lionsgate, we can get back to where it all began with almost the entire cast that started it all! And for the first time since we first made a film in 1993, we’re shooting the entire film on location in New Jersey, as an ode to both the enduring appeal of cinema and ingenuity. and the madness of its storytellers. Years ago, Dante and Randal made me a filmmaker – so now it’s time to give them back. ”

The last time we heard about the plot, Smith was planning on going very meta. Given how Clerk is based on his humble beginnings working with friends as a Quick Stop clerk, he tries to tie the next film to his own life story; Clerk III concerns the characters of Clerk manufacturing Clerk. Basically Randal has a heart attack (like Smith) and realizes he wouldn’t leave a legacy, so he makes a movie about Dante and his pals (like Smith). Say what you want from this synopsis, but it’s way better than the extremely dark original plot Smith imagined, which involved one of the characters being diagnosed with cancer. and a mass shooting.
