CLEVELAND, Ohio – Jarrett Allen stays in Cleveland.
Sources told cleveland.com that Allen and the Cavaliers agreed to a five-year, $ 100 million contract shortly after free agency opened Monday night. The five years are guaranteed, according to sources. The agreement will not be official until the moratorium period on free agencies is lifted Friday at 12:01.
Re-signing Allen, a restricted free agent acquired as part of the blockbuster James Harden in January, was the Cavs’ priority this offseason. Even though they had the rights to Bird and were ready to match any offer from a rival team, the goal was to do something quickly, preventing him from reaching the free agent market.
In 51 games (40 starts) with the Cavs, Allen has averaged a career-high 13.2 points, 9.9 rebounds, 1.7 assists and 1.4 blocks.
When the Houston Rockets sent Harden to the Brooklyn Nets, with little interest in retaining the future free agent, the Cavs gladly joined the deal and sent a Milwaukee Bucks first-round pick for Allen.
After the season, general manager Koby Altman called it one of the highlights of a 22-win season and called Allen “remarkable comfort.” The Cavs see Allen as the long-term starting center – a vital part of a young core that should spark an eventual turnaround. Allen, the 23-year-old inflatable rim protector entering his fifth NBA season, will be paired alongside No.3 pick Evan Mobley in a unique, oversized and defensive frontcourt.
