CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Cleveland Cavaliers plan to honor Kyrie Irving with a video in the opening quarter of Wednesday’s game against the Brooklyn Nets, sources told cleveland.com.
The video, which has been in the vault for years, is slated to air on first media wait and will celebrate Irving and his many accomplishments in six years with the Cavaliers, highlighting The Shot in Game 7 of the Finals. NBA 2016 vs. Golden State Warriors.
“He’s one of our legends and we think he should be honored,” a source said. “We are delighted to celebrate Kyrie.”
The Cavs wanted to air the video in his comeback game on Oct. 17, 2017, the only other time Irving has played in Cleveland since he requested a trade that summer. But his Celtics teammate Gordon Hayward suffered a horrific leg injury and the Cavs called off the celebration, believing it would have been unmoved.
Irving, the No.1 pick in 2011, spent the first six years of his NBA career with the Cavs before being distributed to the Celtics in exchange for Isaiah Thomas, Jae Crowder, Ante Zizic and a coveted draft pick. who ultimately morphed into Collin Sexton. Irving left Boston after two seasons, teaming up with Kevin Durant in Brooklyn in 2018-19.
During his career in Cleveland, Irving was named NBA Rookie of the Year and three-time NBA All-Star, earning All-Star Game MVP honors in 2014. Irving helped the Cavaliers to win their only title in 2016, hitting the biggest blow in franchise history and one of the most memorable in the final.
Only two players – Kevin Love and Matthew Dellavedova – remain from those years, and both will miss Wednesday’s game. Love is sidelined with a calf injury and Dellavedova remains in the league’s concussion protocol, taking longer to recover due to her history of concussions.
Irving will start for Nets.
