On Sunday, the United States Great Lakes Coast Guard rescued 10 people – including three children – who were stranded on ice that had detached from the shore of Edgewater Park in Cleveland.
Rescue officials and the U.S. Coast Guard received a call around 2:30 p.m. Sunday regarding a group of people who had walked on the ice of Lake Erie which then split into two separate blocks of ice.
Initial reports said only a few people were being rescued, but that figure was later increased to 10, including seven adults and three children.
The USCG Ice Rescue Team from Cleveland Harbor Station and local agencies were at the scene. Air Station Detroit also sent a helicopter for support.

The USCG said his team saved six people via a single scull. The other four were escorted off the ice by Cleveland firefighters.

Over the years, many people had to be rescued from the floes that had broken up in Lake Erie. In March 2019, the Coast Guard and various other agencies rescued 46 ice fishermen from a pack ice, NBC News reported.
In 2009, 134 fishermen were stranded and then rescued by the US Coast Guard and local law enforcement in a nationwide rescue, reported The Associated Press.
Hours before Sunday’s rescue, the USCG Great Lakes, citing the National Weather Service of Cleveland, warned of unsafe weather conditions and urged residents to “avoid going on the ice and take action to protect and help oneself ”.
NWS Cleveland had warned that “dangerous ice conditions are developing over the next two days. It is advisable to stay off the ice on Lake Erie as areas of ice could break off from the shore ”.
