CHICAGO – A blustery Sunday afternoon on the south side of Chicago, Cal Quantrill did all he could to win a game for the Indians.
Quantrill pitched six strong innings, while allowing a run for a third straight start. It didn’t work as Brian Goodwin hit a homerun against Nick Wittgren with a ninth inning putout to give the White Sox a 2-1 victory over the Indians at Guaranteed Rate Field.
The White Sox took a nine-game lead over the Indians in AL Central. The two teams have shared 14 games this season.
The Indian defense hurt Quantrill in the fifth as he tried to protect a 1-0 lead. He didn’t help himself by hitting Jose Abreu in the shoulder with the bases loaded to tie the score. But Quantrill should never have been there.
Goodwin started the set with a short left field ball. Shortstop Amed Rosario came out for the ball and left fielder Oscar Mercado ran for it. They made contact with each other and the bullet fell. Mercado was initially accused of the error, but was later handed over to Rosario.
It didn’t matter. The ball should have been caught and Quantrill should have been out of the inning with no scoring point.
It was the second outfield crash in the series for Indians. The end result each time was a race for the White Sox. On Friday night, right fielder Daniel Johnson and center fielder Bradley Zimmer collided in the second inning chasing a ball from Yoan Moncada. Johnson knocked the ball out of Zimmer’s glove and he crossed the fence for a home run.
“It was another communication (problem),” said DeMarlo Hale, interim manager of the Indians. “They had very good crowds here. Sometimes you have to take a look. . .have a little waving arm. Oscar called the ball. Amed just didn’t hear it clearly enough.
“This has happened several times. This is something you can talk about in the future and maybe a little bit louder and take a look at the guy coming from the opposition leadership.
Leury Garcia moved Goodwin to second place with sacrificial decay. Seby Zavala, who hit three home runs on Saturday night, walked. Quantrill struck out Tim Anderson on a ball to the right, but Cesar Hernandez loaded the goals on an infield single to Jose Ramirez, who was moved to the shortstop position.
Abreu came on, who was the center of attention on Friday night when James Karinchak hit him in the head with goals loaded in the eighth inning. It also scored a point, as the benches emptied.
On Sunday, Quantrill hit Abreu with a 2-0 fastball to score Goodwin and make it a 1-1 game. White Sox manager Tony La Russa, who sprinted the field Friday night, pushing wide receiver Roberto Perez away from the fallen Abreu, entered the field on Sunday to speak to the team manager and plate umpire. Maybe he wanted Quantrill to be ejected or for a warning to be given. But Quantrill stayed in the game and it doesn’t look like the teams were warned. Why would Quantrill intentionally hit Abreu with the bases loading while keeping a 1-0 lead?
Quantrill immediately addressed the situation during his Zoom call after the game.
“I wasn’t trying to throw at Jose,” Quantrill said. “There is no reason to do it there. It does not mean anything. I would never try to throw at someone’s head either. The bases are loaded and a run equalizes the match.
The Indians’ game plan is to throw Abreu and do it.
“He was the MVP last year,” Quantrill said. “He’s the best hitter on this team. He is one of the best hitters in the league. You can’t pitch the same pitch over and over and think it’s going to work.
“I throw a lot of indoor shots. This one escaped me. I don’t like tossing anywhere near a guy’s chin. I don’t want to ruin his career or his season. Karinchak feels the same. . Yeah, he’s a good hitter. You have to go inside on good hitters.
Center fielder Myles Straw gave the Indians a 1-0 lead with a first homer in third against Jimmy Lambert, promoted to Class AAA Charleston before the game. It was Straw’s first home run with the Indians and his third of the season. The Indians acquired Straw from Houston just before the 4 p.m. trading deadline Friday.
The Indians, who recorded a season-high 10 more hits in Saturday’s 12-11 win, didn’t do much afterward. They finished with four hits, including two doubles from Rosario.
Quantrill allowed three hits with four walks and six strikeouts. He’s 1-0 with a 1.17 ERA (three earned runs in 23 innings) in his last four starts with 18 strikeouts.
“He was consistent,” Hale said. “It’s the only thing you think is positive. He built himself. You see that consistency and give his team a chance to win and be in the games. “
Wittgren (2-4) took out the White Sox in order in the eighth. He took out Adam Engel in the ninth, but Goodwin beat him with a home run to end it.
Hale sent Wittgren in for the ninth because James Karinchak battled the Sox on Friday and Saturday and Emmanuel Clase needed five strikeouts to save Saturday night’s game.
