CLEVELAND – Manager Terry Francona is stepping away from the Cleveland Indians for the remainder of the season to focus on health issues, with immediate effect, a source told The Athletic. He did not travel with the team to Chicago on Thursday night.
Francona is due to have toe and hip surgeries. He wore a walking boot all season, after a 10-day stay in January at the Cleveland Clinic to resolve a staph infection in his left big toe. He missed much of last season with gastrointestinal issues and blood clotting issues, which required a series of three surgeries over four days and a stay in the intensive care unit.
Bench coach DeMarlo Hale will take on Francona’s role as manager. Mike Sarbaugh will move from third baseman to bench coach.
