KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Sometimes one team beats another team. When that happens in the big leagues, it’s usually a seasonal thing.
Such streaks are difficult to maintain from year to year as rosters tend to renew themselves quickly during the offseason.
The Indians have that kind of streak against the Royals this year. It was on Wednesday night as they beat Kansas City, 5-3, in 11 innings at Kauffman Stadium.
They have won 10 in a row against the Royals and lead the series this season, 10-1. Last year, in the 60-game sprint, the two teams split 10 games.
The Indians had lost their last four overtime games before Wednesday. Their 66th win of the season has therefore not been an easy undertaking. Blake Parker (2-0) had to withdraw from a jam loaded with goals and without withdrawal in the 10th. Then they had to score two runs in the 11th against Ervin Santana, who once threw a hit against the Indians.
Austin Hedges had a single with two outs behind first base to score Daniel Johnson, the automatic runner, for a 4-3 lead. Yu Chang followed with an RBI brace to score Bobby Bradley for the second inning.
Indians are 7-9 in extras this year. The Royals are 3-5. Rule 5 rookie Trevor Stephan got his first big-league save as he pulled the Royals out in order in the 11th.
Parker started 11th with Hanser Alberto, the automatic racer in second. Chang’s pitch error from second base allowed Whit Merrifield to reach base and Parker accompanied Nicky Lopez to load the bases. All he had to do was face Salvador Perez, Carlos Santana and Michael Taylor with the game on the line.
Perez, with 38 home runs and 94 RBIs, was called out on takes 1-2. Santana and Taylor came in second to complete the round.
“When we came out of this round, we felt the game was ours,” Hedges said.

The Indians might have had a chance to win in the ninth, but after a starting brace by Harold Ramirez, Bradley failed to advance pinch runner Oscar Mercado, then Mercado was picked second by Scott Barlow.
“The guy (Barlow) was throwing a lot of sliders,” said interim manager DeMarlo Hale. “So I thought he was thinking maybe he could steal a base or go forward with a bullet in the dirt.
“We talked about this team and their choices. They even did that a lot in spring training, so he was aware of that. I hope he has learned where his limit is and that he won’t go beyond it. I take it as a learning situation and he should know his limit now and not go beyond it. “
Chang’s home run tied the Indians 3-3 with two strikeouts in the seventh. Lefty Jake Brentz, right off the injured list, took out the first two hitters with no problem, but he tried to get an 86mph cursor past Chang on a 1-2 count and it didn’t work. .
It was Chang’s seventh home run and the fourth on a left-hander. Chang has three doubles and four homers in his last six games.
“If you don’t start out, you know you have a role off the bench,” Hale said. “Change being ready. Daniel (Johnson) pinches running over there (11th inning), Mercado pinches running and will play in defense. Collectively, it’s a team effort for sure.
Logan Allen, who got off to a good start against the Red Sox, got into trouble before most fans settled into their seats.
Merrifield opened the first set with a single from Jose Ramirez’s glove in the third. Lopez picked him in second and Allen took out Santana with one to load the bases. Taylor’s sacrificial fly made it 1-0, but Allen called out Andrew Benintendi on a liner down the center track to end the set.
It was more or less the same in the second as Allen flirted with danger.
Adalberto Mondesi, just off the injured list, marked the start of the round. He was second on Alberto’s single. Allen pulled out Merrifield on a ball to the left, but Mondesi and Alberto managed a double steal with Lopez at home. As Modesi slipped into third, a high pitch from receiver Austin Hedges allowed him to score for a 2-0 lead.
Allen pulled Lopez out to keep the game close.
The Royals made it 3-0 at the Mondesi Tour in the fourth quarter, but the Indians were still on the lookout. Royals rookie right-hander Jackson Kowar, activated before the game, limited them to two hits in the first four innings. But they came back in the game in the fifth.
Bradley Zimmer walked on a hike and Harold Ramirez, activated from the injured list, placed him second. Kowar put out the next two batters, but Andres Gimenez, in an 8-for-41 (0.195) slip since his class AAA Columbus recall on August 7, sent a long volley towards the track in the center-left. Taylor found it from center but dropped the ball as Zimmer and Ramirez scored to make it a 3-2 game.
Gimenez was credited with a brace, but was later replaced by a mistake on Taylor.
Allen calmed down after the second and gave the Indians their second straight quality start – six innings or more with three runs or less. He pitched in the seventh and was struck out with two strikeouts and the score tied, 3-3, in favor of Bryan Shaw. In 6 2/3 innings, he allowed three runs, two earned, with three strikeouts and two walks. Allen only threw 76 shots.
“I thought we were a little sloppy at the start of the game, but he weathered the storm,” Hale said. “By that I mean he didn’t let this run (second run) get big. He gave up a run, thinks he has settled down and started to throw the ball well.
Kowar, the Royals’ No.1 pick in 2018, allowed two runs on five hits in six innings. It was his first major league start since June 19 against Boston. He opened the season at Class AAA Omaha and went 5-0 with an ERA of 0.85. The Royals promoted him, but he went 0-2 with an 18.00 ERA in three appearances. He was optioned at Omaha where he was 9-4 with a 3.46 ERA in 17 appearances, including 16 starts.
