Cleveland Indians trade injured outfielder Eddie Rosario to the Atlanta Braves

CHICAGO – The Indians, making their second trade in as many days, sent injured outfielder Eddie Rosario and $ 500,000 to the Atlanta Braves.

In return, Atlanta will send Indians Pablo Sandoval, but it is unclear whether Kung Fu Panda will be added to the Indians’ 26-player roster. The $ 500,000 will help pay off the estimated $ 3 million remaining on Rosario’s one-year, $ 8 million contract.

Rosario, 29, is on the injured list for a strained right oblique. He hasn’t played since July 5 and is expected to spend a few more weeks on the IL.

In two days, the Indians traded second baseman Cesar Hernandez to the White Sox and Rosario in Atlanta. Hernandez was tied for second on the team with Franmil Reyes with 47 RBIs. Rosario finished fourth with 46.

Rosario hit 0.254 (72 for 283) with 15 doubles and seven homers in 78 games. Sandoval is 13 for 73 with Atlanta this year, primarily as a pinch hitter, in 69 games.

The transaction deadline today is 4 p.m. ET.

The signing of the Rosario Indians was their big hit of the offseason. They had seen him beat Indians for six years with the Twins. But the Rosario they signed was not the same player they looked at in a Minnesota uniform.

Yes, he knew how to drive the runs, but the power he displayed with the Twins was lacking. He cut .254 / .295 / .389. Rosario was a fixture in left field and in the middle of the Indian roster until his injury.

Since Rosario was put on the injured list in early July, the Indians have mixed in the outfield with Harold Ramirez, Bradley Zimmer, Oscar Mercado, Daniel Johnson and Reyes.

Jordan Luplow will join this mix on Friday after treating his left ankle injury in class AAA Columbus. He will replace first baseman Bobby Bradley on the 26-man roster. Bradley is on the mourning list due to a death in his family. He is expected to join the team on Sunday.

The Indians also recalled Columbus infielder Owen Miller to take Hernandez’s place on the roster.
