Clippers chairman Lawrence Frank ‘delighted’ to add guard Luke Kennard to bolster roster

Lawrence Frank, president of basketball operations for the LA Clippers, commented on the addition of guard Luke Kennard following the team’s official announcement of its acquisition of Detroit on Thursday.

“Luke is a young, up-and-coming player who has worked hard to establish himself as a reliable shooter and playmaker,” said Frank.

Kennard arrived as part of a deal that sent guards Landry Shamet to Brooklyn and Rodney McGruder to Detroit as the Clippers try to improve the supporting cast around Kawhi Leonard and Paul George.

In addition to Kennard, the Clippers received center Justin Patton from the Pistons in the deal on NBA Draft night, as well as the draft rights for junior college player Jay Scrubb and four second-round picks (2023 via Portland and 2024, 2025 and 2026 via Detroit).

“Draft assets allow us to continue to recruit and develop young talent, or otherwise explore business opportunities, for years to come,” Frank said Thursday confirming the decisions.

Kennard, 24, missed most of last season with tendonitis in his knee. In 28 games, he has averaged career-high points (15.8), assists (4.1) and rebounds (3.5) as a starter for Detroit.

The Clippers also added Minnesota center Daniel Oturu in a draft trade with the New York Knicks for a second-round selection in 2023.

As part of the three-team trade on Wednesday, the Nets received Shamet, Pistons goaltender Bruce Brown and the draft rights of Reggie Perry, who was selected 57th by the Clippers on draft night.

The Pistons acquired the draft rights to Saddiq Bey (the 19 Nets pick in the draft), McGruder, Nets forward Džanan Musa, a second-round pick draft from Toronto in 2021, and the draft rights to Jaylen Hands.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
