HBO Max doubles down on adult animation, orders three series, and sets up an animated development slate.
The streamer placed a two-season order at Clone high, the reboot of the classic MTV series starring Phil Lord, Chris Miller and Bill Lawrence, and commissioned Velma with Mindy Kaling as lead voice star and executive producer and Shot on Mars by Pete Davidson.
These projects are the latest commissioned by HBO Max, which also Harley Quinn, The Prince, Santa Inc., Tom 10 years old and The Boondocks. Last month, it also introduced a new animation landing page.
Clone high, a reboot of the 2002 series set in a high school for clones of historical figures, comes from MTV Entertainment Studios. Lord and Miller are defined as executive producers and writers, Lawrence is executive producer with Erica Rivinoja, who wrote on the original Clone high, named showrunner.

Lord and Miller began their careers writing, directing and executive production Clone high – whose duo first developed the concept at Dartmouth College in the 1990s – alongside Lawrence in 2002.
Velma tells the origin story of Velma Dinkley, the unknown and underrated mastermind of the Scooby-Doo Mystery Inc. gang Voiced and executed by Kaling, the Warner Bros. Animation series has Charlie Grandy, Howard Klein and Sam Register as producers executives.
Nate Sherman and Nick Vokey, who created Adult Swim’s Wet city, have created Shot on Mars, an existential workplace comedy set on the Martian campus of a modern tech company. Based on their short film, SNL The Davidson star voices a character and produces an executive with Carson Mell and Dave Sirus.
HBO Max also handed over JG Quintel’s adult animated comedy Close enough a renewal of two seasons. The show comes from Cartoon Network Studios.
Elsewhere, the company produces presentations for a list of developing originals.
These included Hi Paul, about a neurotic millennial cat whose hard work and mouse roommate stress him out of creator and musician Sean Solomon; Obi, about a 30-year-old man-child pursuing his dream of becoming an artist while sailing into adulthood with his friends from Michael B. Jordan’s Outlier Society, Studio71 and David Devries, based on an Instagram comic and co-created by Obi Arisukwu and Arthur Harris; Uncanny Valley, from creators Brendan Walter and Greg Yagolnitzer and executive producer Ed Helms who tell the story of three goofy house robots who kill their human owners and attempt to assume their identity and are from Universal Television and Pacific Electric Picture Company; and Blanket, an adaptation of the Brian Michael Bendis and David Mack DC Comics series, an animated spy thriller and conspiratorial love letter to the comic book industry from Rooster Teeth.
