The Oscar winner, who played selfish landlord Phyllis Lindstrom on the ’70s hit show, died at the age of 94 on Wednesday.
Asner, 91, played Mary Lou Grant’s boss on the show and had a close friendship with Leachman off-set.
“She was a honey,” the actor told ETOnline Thursday of his beloved boyfriend. “The nice woman she was. But we had a bad girlfriend, and we dug a lot. During her lifetime, Leachman won eight Emmys, linking her to Julia Louis-Dreyfus. She also won an Oscar for the 1971 film “The Last Picture Show”.

Phyllis was so unexpectedly engaging that Leachman starred in a spinoff series of her own, “Phyllis,” which ran on CBS from 1975 to 1977.
Leachman, who debuted as Miss Chicago in the Miss America pageant, voluntarily took on comical and unglamorous screen roles during her reign in Hollywood.
