Now you can slip into people’s Clubhouse DMs. The social audio company is launching today its direct messaging feature, Backchannel, for all users on iOS and Android. For now, users can chat one-on-one, in groups, and send links. They can’t send pictures or videos yet, but a spokesperson said features are on the way, along with “a few other features.” There will also be an optional secondary inbox where requests for messages will be broadcast.
The feature is designed to help moderators chat with each other during an active room; let people log in after an event; and more broadly, encourage text conversations that otherwise would have to take place in a separate app. We can’t say that this development is a big surprise, however: Clubhouse accidentally disclosed the feature in June.
Still, this is a critical development for the app, which the company says has now been downloaded more than 8 million times on Android devices with more than 500,000 rooms created daily. Its competitors, including Twitter Spaces and Facebook Live Audio Rooms, both allow people to chat via text message while performing or participating in an audio chat. on the app.
