A shouting match on CNBC went viral on Friday after on-air editor Rick Santelli and “Squawk Box” co-host Andrew Ross Sorkin engaged in an intense exchange about the ongoing coronavirus lockdowns.
The heated debate began when Santelli addressed the growing list of Democratic leaders who have been caught violating their own guidelines as part of efforts to prevent the spread of the disease, but stressed that he was not focusing on “hypocrisy” and instead pointed out that these “smart people” clearly believe that it is safe enough for them and their families to dine out.

“Therefore, there is actually and should be an ongoing debate as to why a parking lot for a big box store like my home is crowded, not a single open parking space. Why are these people safer than a plexiglass restaurant “I just don’t understand,” Santelli explained. “I think it’s really sad that when we look at the service sector in all the discussions we’ve had about job losses, this particular dynamic isn’t studied more, doesn’t work more, we don’t introduce no more people in a room and try to find ways that these service workers and employers can all come back in a safer way. “
The veteran business reporter added: “You can’t tell me that closing, which is the simplest answer, is necessarily the only answer.”
Sorkin then stepped in to provide viewers with a “public service announcement” to undermine Santelli’s remarks.
“The difference between a big box retailer and a restaurant or, frankly, even a church is so different, it’s amazing,” Sorkin said.
“I disagree. I disagree!” Santelli exclaimed. “You can have your thoughts and I can have mine!”

“You wear a mask! You have to wear a mask! It’s science,” Sorkin continued. “I’m sorry. It’s science. If you wear a mask, that’s another story!”
“It’s not science!” Santelli retaliated. “500 people in a Lowe’s is no safer than 150 people in a restaurant that has 600 people. I don’t believe it! Sorry, I don’t believe it, and I live in an area where there are many of restaurants that fought back and they have no problem. And they are open! “
“You don’t have to believe it,” replied the CNBC mainstay who also writes for The New York Times, “but let me just say this: you are doing viewers a disservice-“
Santelli replied: “You are doing the viewer a disservice! You are! You are!”

Sorkin told Santelli he wanted to “keep our viewers as healthy as possible”, but Santelli hit his colleague by saying, “I think our viewers are smart enough to be part of these decisions on their own!”
“I don’t think I’m much smarter than all viewers like some are,” Santelli offered – glancing at his colleague.
