CNN broadcasts the much awaited debates, sanctioned by the Democratic National Democratic Committee, live from Detroit at 8 pm HE July 30th and 31st. Dana Bash, Don Lemon and Jake Tapper will play the moderating roles of both debates.

Candidates will not officially learn when they go to the Detroit scene before July 17, but the call for more than 20 Democratic campaigns on Tuesday was arranged to help them prepare for the debate if their respective candidates qualified, said a spokesman for CNN.

The window to determine eligibility for debate closes on July 16 and candidates will be notified the next day they will be invited to participate in Detroit. On July 18, CNN will broadcast a live draw to determine the specific candidate alignments for each debate night.

Campaign representatives also learned Tuesday that candidates would have 60 seconds to answer a question posed by the moderator and 30 seconds for answers and rebuttals.

In addition, the representatives of the campaign were informed:

  • Colored LEDs will be used to help candidates manage the remaining response time: 15 seconds = yellow; 5 seconds = flashing red; no remaining time = solid red.
  • A candidate attacked by a nominee by another candidate will have 30 seconds to respond.
  • There will be no show of hands or questions of a single word.
  • A candidate who interrupts regularly will see his time reduced.
  • The questions asked by the moderators will appear at the bottom of the screen for viewers.

CNN and the DNC will also be launching broad nets to gauge the concerns and interests of voters in the weeks leading up to the debate, CNN spokesman said.
