CNN proposes travel bans to states like Florida and Louisiana for increase in COVID cases

CNN’s “New Day” hosts on Monday suggested a travel ban for states like Florida where the number of COVID cases is on the rise.

“New Day” co-host Brianna Keilar told viewers that one in five people hospitalized with COVID-19 in the United States are from Florida. She then referred to a comment by CNN medical analyst Dr Jonathan Reiner.

“It’s so high in Florida that I think if Florida was another country we should consider banning travel from Florida to the United States. [DeSantis] needs to understand that he painted himself in a corner. People are dying in Florida, it’s going to get worse. Hospitals are filling up with people, ”said Reiner.

Co-host John Berman asked CNN analyst Harry Enten, “If Florida or Louisiana were foreign countries, would we ban travel at this point?”

The CNN reporter said Dr Reiner was “on to something” about a travel ban against states like Florida. Enten said countries like the UK, Greece and France, which have travel restrictions imposed by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, currently have lower COVID rates than Florida and Louisiana. .

“So, yeah, those places, Louisiana and Florida, and there are other states there as well, they’re worse than places where travelers are mostly off limits,” Enten said.

The CDC has issued new travel guidelines placing several new countries on a “Do Not Travel” list. Authorities have added Israel, Thailand, French Polynesia and several other countries to a “Level 4: very high” risk destination label. The UK and France were also included in a “level 4” notice along with over seventy other countries.

Media experts have frequently attacked Republican Florida and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis for refusing to enforce mask and vaccine warrants in his state. CNN’s Chris Cuomo has spent the majority of his show last week attacking DeSantis despite ongoing scandals surrounding his brother, Governor Andrew Cuomo.

“You have Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis. He’s the one who started the ‘Don’t Fauci Florida’ campaign. Vaccinated. You made fun of the man behind the vaccine, now you are there,” Cuomo said.

CNN has denounced travel restrictions in 2020 following President Donald Trump’s travel ban to China at the start of the pandemic. Journalist Catherine E. Shoichet warned that “experts say the travel restrictions put in place by the Trump administration to prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus could have unintended consequences that would undermine this effort.”
