CNN will shut down its airport network, which provided news feeds to airport controllers across the country.
CNN Chairman Jeff Zucker wrote in a memo that the network would cease March 31.
“The sharp drop in airport traffic from COVID-19, coupled with all the new ways people consume content on their personal devices, has reduced the need,” Zucker wrote.
The network has been operating for 30 years.
“I’m sure most of us have a story to tell about the airport we were in when we first learned of a major event,” Zucker wrote. “Be proud to have helped share incredible stories with millions of people over the past three decades.”
CNN’s Oliver Darcy first reported the news.
The network broadcast personalized information to nearly 60 airports in the United States. The content was a mixture of news, weather and lifestyle programming. The network had a captive audience, even though it increasingly consumes video through its personal devices.
It was not immediately clear how many employees would be affected by the closure. CNN ended its digital business Great Big Story in September.
