Coach K growls at student reporter before asking for ’empathy’

Duke’s coach Mike Krzyzewski took a unprofessional moment interacting with a student reporter after his team’s 70-65 loss to Louisville on Saturday.

Krzyzewski faced a harmless question: What’s the next step forward as the Blue Devils enter next week?

“Yeah, why don’t you just rate this game,” Krzyzewski said after game. “You know, I’m not in our next step right now. We have just finished a tough game.

Then Coach K tried to connect with the student in an awkward exchange.

“I don’t know if, like, when – what are you major?” Krzyzewski asked. “What’s your middle finger at Duke?” What is your most difficult class? “

Piazza responded by saying “Econ”.

“OK, so let’s say you just passed the toughest Econ test in the world,” Krzyzewski said. “And when you got out, someone asked you, ‘What’s your next step?’ You know what I mean? Just that you empathize – just give us time to evaluate this game and then we’ll figure it out, as we always try to do.

It’s not a good sign that Coach K, a 73-year-old man who is paid millions to handle the rigors of his job, equates to a student finishing an exam. The comparison is clearly flawed.

If we’re real, Coach K should show some empathy for this student reporter, who asked a simple question that didn’t deserve such a sneaky answer.
