Coachella 2019 Review: a festival designed for YouTube

In January, it was widely reported that he had withdrawn immediately before Kanye West was announced as one of Coachella's 2019 headliners. The breaking point, apparently, was when festival organizers could not respond to West's claim to be able to perform in a giant dome in the middle of the festival grounds, which would require moving or eliminating bathrooms and other infrastructure. (Kanye will present his series of gospel performances "Sunday Service" on the hillside at Coachella campsites next weekend.)

The idea that Kanye West would end up in the stalemate of a concert organizer on a grandiose production design problem is not, in itself, particularly surprising. What raised some eyebrows is the fact that Ariana Grande was chosen as a last-minute replacement, since she seems much more attractive than her compatriots Glover and Tame Impala (and probably also West in 2019). In January, Grande was coming out of a massive album and a follow-up single, and between her was announced as Sunday's headliner and the festival itself, she dropped another successful album. Overall, his band claimed his position as a particularly prolific hitmaker, the rare star whose production accelerated as it became more and more famous.

Before Grande came on stage, she had advertised on Twitter the possibility of an appearance in * NSYNC – she had tried their "Makes Me Ill" during her hit "Break up with your girlfriend, I m". "Bored" – and early in the night, the band (without Justin Timberlake) came for this song and to play his own "Tearin 'Up My Heart", stirring the screams of some nostalgic members of the crowd. She also invited Nicki Minaj to perform two duets, although this cameo was complicated by sound problems.

But * NSYNC and Nicki have largely turned out to be management errors. After finding songs from his first two albums, Yours sincerely and My everything, Grande invited Diddy and Mase to play "Mo Money Mo Problems", a crazy and strange showstopper. But as quickly as Diddy and Mase appeared, they were swallowed up by Grande's own "NASA", by "Dangerous Woman" and, finally, by "thanks, then". It was a pretty energetic set for the pop star considering her remarkable work ethic: she appreciated everyone's enthusiasm, but there was still work to be done.
