(CNN) – The U.S. Coast Guard rescued three Cuban nationals from a desert island in Bahaman, where they had lived on coconuts for 33 days, the agency said.

“It was amazing. I don’t know how they did it. I was amazed that they were as fit as they were,” Lt. Justin Dougherty told CNN affiliate WPLG.

On Monday, during routine patrols, U.S. Coast Guard crews saw the two men and a woman waving makeshift flags in Anguilla Cay, located in an island chain between the Lower Florida Keys and Cuba. The Coast Guard dropped a radio, food and water to the trio on Monday and rescued them from the island on Tuesday.

The Cuban boat capsized in rough waters about five weeks ago, the trio told the Coast Guard, and they swam to the island.

The trio reportedly had no serious injuries, but were airlifted to Lower Keys Medical Center for examination.

CNN has contacted the Lower Keys Medical Center for information on their condition.
