An important Karate kid the character has finally did it Cobra Kai start.

Season 3 of the martial arts drama series hit Netflix on Friday, and with it came the return of a Miyagi-verse favorite. Ali Mills of Elizabeth Shue, a former sweetheart of Johnny and Daniel, returned to the Valley to reconnect with her exes, offering a stranger’s perspective and a bit of wisdom that helped crush the lingering tension between the two senseis.

His comeback was heavily teased in the show’s second season, which ended with Ali sending Johnny a friend request on Facebook. But in Episode 9 of the final series, Shue finally appeared, arriving just in time to unite the former nemeses so they could begin to prepare for the biggest battle to come: defeating John Kreese and Cobra Kai once. for all.

Here, TVLine talks to executive producers and co-showrunners Josh Heald, Jon Hurwitz, and Hayden Schlossberg about how they’ve kept Shue mum’s appearance, why Season 3 was the perfect time to bring her back, and why Ali became “The force that brings Daniel and Johnny together.

Cobra Kai Season 3 Ali MillsTVLINE | How did you keep Elisabeth’s return such a closely guarded secret?
CURE |
We just threatened everyone! [Laughs] We spoke to all the artists: “Don’t post anything on social media, don’t comment on your friends or relatives. Please keep this secret. We have had [everyone] signing pretty strict nondisclosure agreements with indeterminate consequences – I have no idea what they were – but it just had to work, apparently. We also just led with a big, warm hug like, “ Hey look around and see how special that is. Imagine how special it will be if people can find out as a surprise. We operate like that with a lot of stories on this show. We are probably boring to work with the marketing department on some level, because we always ask that the flashiest and sexiest moments be excluded from the marketing campaign entirely.

But we go back to those days when there was no Internet. You haven’t been bombarded with new clips every day and first frames, and the barrage of material that has now become commonplace and necessary to attract audiences in such a fragmented world. We remember going to the movies and finding out for the first time something that wasn’t in the trailer or the commercial, and how magical it was. It’s harder to do these days, but that doesn’t mean we won’t keep trying to do it.

TVLINE | I imagine it was similar to the big final reveal of season 1?
CURE |
We did it with Kreese in the first season. Martin Kove is one of the big champions of the show, and we love it, but throughout the first season there were a lot of therapy phone calls asking him not to say anything. By the time it is discovered, it will be a blast, and you can talk about it forever because people want to. It will just be much bigger. So that was the trial balloon, I would say, to keep it a secret with Ali.

TVLINE | Were there ever plans to bring her in at the very beginning? Why wait for season 3 to reintroduce Ali?
SCHLOSSBERG |
We reached out to [Shue] somewhere during season 2, after seeing a show. We knew she knew about the show, that she had seen it and loved it. We had good vibes about the potential of being able to work with her when the time was right. For the fan base that follows this story, the hardcore fans, it’s such a great time to bring it into history, so we really wanted it to be perfect.

We weren’t 100% sure if we were getting it because there are all kinds of external factors that could arise. But as soon as we got the green light to do Season 3, that was one of the first things we discussed with Sony and our cast. We really wanted to make sure she would be there at the end of the season, and everything went as you hoped when it comes time to make this whole deal.

TVLINE | Using social media in the storyline from Season 2 seemed like the perfect way to tease his comeback.
SCHLOSSBERG |
Right from the start, we loved the idea of playing his character, at the start, through Johnny’s eyes looking at his life through social media. It’s something we think a lot of people might relate to when it comes to old flames and friends from the past. We knew Johnny was interested in her and we loved the idea of seeing him see her on Facebook and see her life looking perfect. But when you meet her at the end of the season, it’s not just roses. She’s dealing with her own issues, and it’s the story we threw at her that I think she got interested in, and something that can be told to a lot of people. The grass is always greener when you see someone’s life on social media, and that leads to a lot of comedy, but also some real moments with them. In the end, of course, it was just poetic that she was the force that brings Daniel and Johnny together at the end of the season.

Cobra Kai Season 3 Johnny AliTVLINE | Let’s talk a bit about Ali’s effect on Johnny. I love the line when she says to him: “You have a future to find”, as if she is defending her future. What did he learn from her and why did he need this reunion?
HURWITZ |
Johnny’s life has been a mess for so long. He’s a guy who has self-sabotaged himself at times in his life, so being in that place where he starts connecting with a woman and having the anxiety like, ‘OK, I could seriously involve with someone, [and it’s] the mother of my best karate student / surrogate son, “there is typical nervousness. He’s clearly hooked on Ali for all these years in one way or another, so being able to see her again and get a little glimpse into the past with her, but also from the perspective of adulthood is strong for him. not only on the side of his love life, but also on the level of LaRusso and the approach with Daniel.

His involvement in those scenes with Johnny and Daniel at the country club ends up leading to these two guys who can’t seem to take a moment to think about their own roles and the issues they may have in realizing maybe they are. may not be. different after all. Even though she hasn’t seen them for so many years, just to spend some time with them and remember who they were in high school, she acknowledges that maybe she could give them some wisdom it can do them. help move forward.

TVLINE | The scene at Golf N ‘Stuff when Johnny and Ali are on the bench outside: why did you stop before getting them fucked?
CURE | We went back and forth on this almost kiss and we almost said it could have been a real kiss. Ultimately, we wanted to preserve that moment on the steps where she helps Johnny realize that his life makes sense with Carmen, and we didn’t want to feel like he needed a little prank. to succeed. It was more of an emotional connection [with Ali] than physical. It should be take away.

TVLINE | With Cobra Kai already renewed for a fourth season, is there any chance we will see Ali again?
CURE | We will not be commenting on our future plans with anyone who is a character inherited from these films except to say that we have a long story to tell. We always leave the door wide open for anyone from the Miyagi verse to enter and exit the series.
