the third season of Cobra Kai has now been absent for four days. How many times have you watched the whole thing? Six? Seven? We’re kidding of course, but you had better finish it if you want to read on. io9 made a discussion with Zoom with the creators and executive producers of Karate kid show, Jon Hurwitz, Hayden Schlossberg, and Josh Heald, and we’ve talked about everything you’re curious about once season three is over.

Having said that, if you haven’t finished Cobra KaI season 3 (or, God forbid, watched it all) go do that now. If so, continue below as we get to the bottom of these burning questions.

Germain Lussier, io9: What were the big things you wanted to achieve in Season 3?

Jon Hurwitz: We wanted to bring Ali back. We wanted to go into Kreese’s past and do a whole Vietnam scenario. We wanted to go to Okinawa. These are the three big elements of the season that we talked about. Also, our hope was to get Johnny and Daniel together by the end and tease the audience along the way.

io9: When you teased Ali’s return at the end of season 2 Had Elizabeth Shue already signed and did you know what you were going to do with her if she did?

Josh heard: She was not listed when we did this. It was an example of us leading with our confidence and faith that the Karate kid the gods will smile at us and get there. But we were actively engaged in speaking with Elizabeth even before that, trying to share the love of what this show is, where we come from as fans who become the stewards of The Karate Kid and wanting to move this character forward in this universe and find the right way to do it.

But at that time, there was literally no knowledge or way to know if it was going to happen or go south. And we said, “You know what? We always end the season this way. We will always have to be optimistic about this. And it was just very special. A special process and a special re-arrival for Ali in the entertainment world and really on our set. I mean, when Elizabeth Shue got there, it was like, “Here’s that missing piece of the puzzle that could help Johnny and Daniel fit together a little better.” And there were real goosebumps and real smiles plastered on our faces. I’m sure the backstage photos only show the three of us on a monitor smiling ear to ear watching them act together again. The series just wouldn’t be complete without starting to tell Ali’s story as well.

The glory of love indeed.

io9: Tell me how you developed the role a trip to Okinawa would play in the show

Hurwitz: We’re always looking for a surprising way to bring back characters. And we felt it would be interesting to have Daniel on this side of the world for another reason and for him to be at a relatively low point where he’s a bit lost and finds the Okinawa draw too strong. so that it does not. that extra little trip back to Miyagi’s homeland, which was a special place in her past, the birth of her karate and the birthplace of her mentor. To get him out there in this context where he’s just sort of lost and looking, then finds what he’s looking for, but unexpectedly.

And we knew we wanted Kumiko (Tamlyn Tomita) to be involved in a meaningful way that tied into the past relationship and past actions. And so that there is some wisdom to pass on to Daniel. To bring Mr. Miyagi back into history in a different way than we’ve ever had before. And, for us, this letter-reading scene is one of our favorite scenes we’ve ever done on the show. It was such a powerful and powerful moment.

Then to bring Chozen (Yuji Okumoto) back … Together we crafted the story that we believe made these characters and actors shine, but also allowed Daniel to learn new layers of Mr. Miyagi. and new layers of karate. Doing those kinds of scenes that you knew the fans were going to go crazy for, but that made sense to our current story.

io9: How did you imagine the story of Kreese and Martin Kove was involved?

Hayden Schlossberg: At the start of season two, we had already thought about it and we plan to dive into it. And when we spoke to Marty … about the character and his backstory, he had planned this whole backstory which was different on the surface, but basically very similar in terms of Vietnam trauma and POW. . So we have always been our ideas. What we wanted was to understand how this guy we grew up with as the most evil character of all time could have been a human being that you might feel bad about once …[Also] we wanted him to be in the heart of darkness and truly learn “No Mercy” as a must in life. And the way to do it is to show mercy, and it really isn’t working for you.

io9: Was it actually Terry Silver on the phone at the end of the show and could his return also mark the return of Mr.power Barnes?

Schlossberg: Look, we’re die-hard fans of all movies. And let’s just put it this way. We spend time telling a story to Terry Silver in season three. You get to see the past Terry Silver. We treat all of these characters from those original movies like they really matter in the universe. And we don’t want to say anything official about season four yet, but Kreese is looking at a photo of young Terry Silver and he dials a number and makes a call. And you can imagine who’s on the other end. So we’re not making any official statements, but, hypothetically, there are still plenty of interesting soap operas to say that we can’t wait to say.

io9: Well can you say something about season 4? Looks like at least we have at least one more All-Valley karate tournament.

Schlossberg: What we can say about season four. The stakes have never been higher at All-Valley.

Cobra Kai seasons 1 through 3 are now on Netflix. Season 4 is in preparation.
