MARIETTA, Georgia (AP) – A global company has stepped in to solve a whole “coinundrum” for a man from Georgia.
Andreas Flaten’s former employer threw away at least 90,000 cents on his driveway last month as a form of final payment for his work at an auto store, he said.
When Bellevue, Washington-based Coinstar heard about their predicament, they decided a change was needed.
They picked up Flaten’s coins on Thursday and rounded up the amount to give him a check for $ 1,000.
They also made donations to two charities chosen by Flaten: two animal shelters.
“Coinstar has been in the coin business for 30 years and we process around 41 billion coins a year – so collecting 91,000 cents was a day’s work,” Coinstar CEO Jim Gaherity said in a statement.
Flaten said his former employer – A OK Walker Autoworks in Peachtree City – owed him $ 915 after quitting his job there in November.
He finally received his paycheck earlier this month in the form of thousands of pennies covered in oil or grease tossed down his driveway in Fayetteville, Georgia. On top of the pile: an envelope with Flaten’s last pay slip and a farewell note that included obscenity.
Flaten would spend an hour or two every night trying to clean the coins he stored in a wheelbarrow in his garage.
Store owner Miles Walker told WGCL-TV he was unsure whether or not he deposited the pennies with Flaten.
“I don’t really remember,” Walker said. “It does not matter. He got paid, that’s all that matters.
