Colin Jost and Scarlett Johannson welcomed their son, named Cosmo, in August, but their choice of a single name took Jost’s family a minute to “get”.
On Thursday, the “Saturday Night Live” star appeared on “The Late Show with Seth Meyers” and joked that her mother “was slightly upset.”
“My mom, I’d say… didn’t quite get it. I don’t know if she thought it was kind of like a hippie thing,” he recalls.
Jost admitted that even after finalizing the name at the hospital, his mother was still trying to convince them to change it.

“She would call us after three or four days, she would say ‘Cosmo’,” Jost said. “And she was like, ‘And now, is this final? Like, did you submit the birth certificate?’ And we’re like, “Oh, yeah, we did that in the hospital.” She was like, “OK, interesting. Because I was reading that there was also a Cosimo name with an “I”, so that could also be an option. Maybe Cosimo is his real name, but then you can still call him Cosmo. “”

Jost said after talking with neighborhood friends on Staten Island, his mother learned there were a lot more Cosmos.
“Eventually she started to meet various members of the Italian community who have a lot of Cosmo parents,” he said with a laugh. “And so she would call, and she would say, ‘I met someone, they said their uncle’s name is Cosmo. So it’s okay.'”

Cosmo is Jost’s first child and the Marvel star’s second. She also shares her 7-year-old daughter Rose with her ex-husband Romain Dauriac.
Jost confirmed Cosmo’s birth in a light social media post at the time. He wrote, “Okay, we had a baby. His name is Cosmo. We love him very much.”

The comedian and actress tied the knot last year in an “intimate ceremony” in October. They became hired in May 2019 after two years of dating.
