Democrats added another Republican to their list of speakers at the convention Tuesday: Colin Powell, former Secretary of State to George W. Bush.

Powell has endorsed Biden before, and he’s also backed Hillary Clinton in 2016 and Barack Obama in his 2008 and 2012 campaigns. But this is his first time speaking at a Democratic convention.

“Our country needs a Commander-in-Chief who takes care of our troops, the same way he would care for his own family,” Powell said in a clip released Tuesday. “For Joe Biden, it doesn’t need to be taught. It comes from the experience he shares with millions of military families, sending his beloved son to war and praying to God that he will come home safe and sound.

Powell also talks about the need to restore the values Biden exemplified in the White House.

Powell’s appearance will also take place on the same evening that Cindy McCain, John McCain’s widow, will be heard in a video about her late husband’s friendship with Biden. Cindy McCain’s appearance wouldn’t be an endorsement, at least not yet.

As news broke about Powell’s appearance, President Donald Trump retweeted derogatory comments, including one calling him a “neoconservative ADM hoax.”
