Seventy-one of the victims have been identified and their next of kin notified, Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava said.

There are now 217 registered people and 31 others “potentially missing”, she said.

The recovery of casualties was much faster after the search operation shifted its focus from rescue to recovery. Levine Cava said crews were making “incredible progress” and by Sunday morning more than 14 million pounds of concrete and debris were removed from the site.

It’s always a delicate job, Surfside Mayor Charles Burkett told reporters search and salvage officers “even found bottles of wine intact in the rubble and retrieved them.”

Miami-Dade Fire Chief Alan Cominsky echoed that statement. The debris removal process is faster for the section of the building that remained standing after the collapse and was shot down in a controlled demolition last week over fears it posed a threat to search teams and rescue.

“On the rubble heap where we’re still in our search and recovery, it’s still a methodical process,” Cominsky said. “The crews there, they watch, they dig by hand… As we delay, it’s a slow process.”

Other personal effects, like rings, also continue to be collected, said Burkett. These items are “returned to the site’s storage area, classified, photographed and kept for families”.

Some of the search and rescue forces that had been deployed to Surfside from out of state or country are starting to leave, including a team from Israel. Levine Cava said the team will depart on Sunday after handing two of its leaders the keys to Miami-Dade County to recognize their service to the community.
