Loughlin and Giannulli are among dozens of wealthy parents who have been accused of using their means to thwart competitive college admissions.

Lawyer William J. Trach of Latham & Watkins Law Firm sent a letter in response to the government motion. The firm represents Loughlin and Giannulli in their federal record in the college admissions scandal, but also represents the university in an unrelated case.
"USC has suggested that Latham's portrayal of Ms. Loughlin and Mr. Giannulli could conflict with her interests in potential civil litigation with these people," Trach wrote. The letter also states that it is unrealistic to fear that either party will seek to quash a conviction by relying on an ineffective lawyer.
Trach noted in the letter: "After carefully reviewing the applicable ethical rules and the precedent in light of the substance and scope of our statements, our company concluded that there was no conflict of laws. 39, current or foreseeable interest and that we took appropriate steps to: avoid any such conflict of interest during the course of the proceedings.
