Other conferences might have more eye-catching late-night marks – think # Pac12AfterDark or # MACtion – but Tulsa just might have given us the craziest end of the season in a Thursday night clash between the AAC and Tulane.
Playing in his first ranked team game since 2010, Tulsa’s attempt to stay in the top 25 was strained when the Golden Hurricane was forced to turn to his third-string quarterback. Trailing by seven with less than a minute to go, it appeared Tulsa’s stay among the best in the game would be short-lived.
Davis Brin and JuanCarlos Santana had other ideas.
Brin, forced into action when Tulsa’s first two quarterbacks were knocked out with injury, found Santana on a 37-yard Hail Mary touchdown as time expired to tie the game, 21-21, and send it to overtime.
Tulsa received the first possession in overtime and the two teams traded goals on the field. As if the game hadn’t already had enough madness, Tulsa defensive back Zaven Collins intercepted Tulane quarterback Michael Pratt and returned him 96 yards for the score at the start.
Not bad for a scoreless game at half-time.
Brin finished the game 18 for 28 for 266 yards and two touchdowns, adding another rushing score. Santana was his favorite target of the night, as the junior had eight catches for 138 yards and the tying touchdown. For the season, Collins now has four interceptions – tied for most in the FBS – with two returned for scores.
The win was Tulsa’s fifth in a row, and the Golden Hurricane now has four wins by eight points or less. The remaining two games on his schedule will be tough: Tulsa travels the road to face Houston on November 28 before ending his regular season at home against No.7 Cincinnati.
Few would bet on Tulsa heading the table, but the fact that the team is entering the conversation as the best team in the nation’s Group-Five is an accomplishment in itself.
